What is the Concrete Volume Calculator?
The Concrete Volume Calculator is a free tool for engineers and builders to estimate the exact amount of concrete required for a project. It automatically breaks down the total volume into raw materials: cement, sand, and gravel based on standard mix ratios.
Concrete Calculation Formula
To find the concrete volume, we multiply the dimensions. Then, we apply a dry volume factor of 1.54 to account for shrinkage when wet concrete dries.
Practical Example
If you are pouring a slab that is 5m long, 4m wide, and 10cm (0.1m) thick: The wet volume is 5 × 4 × 0.1 = 2.0 m³. To find the dry materials, we multiply by 1.54, giving 3.08 m³. For a 1:2:4 mix (7 parts total), the cement volume is 3.08 / 7 = 0.44 m³. Sand is 0.44 × 2 = 0.88 m³, and Gravel is 0.44 × 4 = 1.76 m³.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we multiply by 1.54?
Dry concrete materials shrink by about 30-35% when water is added. The 1.54 factor converts the required wet volume back to the total dry volume needed.
What is a M20 grade concrete?
M20 is a standard concrete grade with a mix ratio of 1:1.5:3 (Cement:Sand:Gravel). It has a compressive strength of 20 MPa after 28 days.
How much water do I need?
Typically, a water-to-cement ratio of 0.45 to 0.55 is used. This translates to roughly 25-30 liters of water per 50kg bag of cement.
